How to choose artificial turf

Start with the sport, then look at what goes under and around the turf.

Turf systems

  • Football, soccer and lacrosse fields: Sprinturf's Predator systems and UltraBlade range, and GeoSurfaces' GeoGreen, a "replicated grass" turf with a filament height up to 2 inches.
  • Baseball and softball: Sprinturf's GrandSlam and GrandSlam Extreme systems, and GeoSurfaces' GeoTrax SB softball infield turf and warning track surface, which GeoSurfaces says meet NCAA and high school criteria.
  • Infill-free turf: GeoGreen PEN has a 1 1/8 inch pile with polyethylene yarn and a nylon thatch, and needs no infill.
  • Multi-sport and indoor use: TenCate's Pivot Performance Turf is listed for outdoor and indoor use, with a 12 year warranty outdoors and 15 years indoors.

Bases, infill and equipment

  • Shock pad and infill: the GeoFlo+ is a shock pad that also drains, and Pivot Cool is an inorganic infill that cools the surface through slow evaporation.
  • Bases: Ultra Base's Champion, Professional, Omni and MAX panels are interlocking sub bases for artificial turf, and the GeoBase RIGD is a grid filled with concrete to make a flat field base.
  • Infill and maintenance machines: SMG's SandMatic spreads infill, its RenoMatic machines remove it, and the SportChamp and GeoSurfaces' GeoGroomer clean and groom the surface.

Before you choose, settle these points:

  • The sport and level of play. Baseball infields, football fields and multi-sport fields are specified differently.
  • Pile height and face weight. Both are on each product page, and they affect how the turf looks, plays and wears.
  • Infill or infill-free. It changes the surface, the upkeep and the equipment you need.
  • The base and drainage. Check how the base and any shock pad drain in your climate and soil.
  • Heat. If surface temperature matters on your site, ask about infill cooling options.
  • Warranty and upkeep. Both vary by system, so compare them on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

What does this catalogue cover for artificial turf?

Turf systems for baseball, softball, football, soccer, lacrosse and multi-sport fields, a shock pad, an infill cooling agent, interlocking turf bases, and infill and maintenance machines. They come from GeoSurfaces, SMG, Sprinturf, TenCate and Ultra Base.

Which turf suits baseball and softball, and which suits football, soccer and lacrosse?

Sprinturf's GrandSlam systems and GeoSurfaces' GeoTrax SB softball infield turf are made for baseball and softball. Sprinturf's Predator systems and UltraBlade range suit football, soccer and lacrosse, as does GeoSurfaces' GeoGreen.

What is the difference between infilled and infill-free turf?

Infilled turf such as GeoGreen uses infill over a ballast layer, while GeoGreen PEN is infill-free, using a nylon thatch and polyethylene yarn instead. The choice affects the surface feel, upkeep and the equipment you need.

What is an infill cooling agent?

Pivot Cool is an inorganic aragonite infill that cools the playing surface through slow evaporation. GeoSurfaces says it works with Pivot Performance Turf and with older turf systems, and does not decay, float or need constant watering.

Do I need a base and a shock pad under artificial turf?

A stable, draining base matters, and options here include Ultra Base's interlocking panels and GeoSurfaces' GeoBase concrete grid. A shock pad such as GeoFlo+ adds impact absorption and drainage under the turf. Ask the brand which combination suits your field.

What equipment maintains artificial turf?

SMG's SandMatic spreads infill and its RenoMatic machines remove it. The SportChamp is a ride-on machine for cleaning and maintenance, and GeoSurfaces' GeoGroomer sweeps debris without displacing infill.
