How to choose a running track

A track project needs two decisions: which surface system, and which equipment builds it.

Track surfaces

  • Surfaces for indoor and outdoor use: Robbins' Durathon Elite range is vulcanized rubber for running tracks and field-house infields, from 6 to 13 mm thick, and can be used indoors or out. Its Pulastic range of seamless polyurethane floors is used for indoor and outdoor track and field.
  • GeoTrax track systems: GeoSurfaces' FP is a 15 mm, three-layer impermeable full-pour track and the FP-10 is a 10 mm, two-layer version. The SW is a 14 mm impermeable sandwich system, and the SP is a 13 mm permeable structural spray track aimed at regional tracks and university programs. GeoSurfaces lists the FP, SW and SP as IAAF approved systems, and all four carry a 5 year warranty.

Track construction equipment

  • Mixing: SMG's MixMatic mixers range from the compact M250 and the electric M140 to the M1100L and M2404L mixing shovels, and the M5300 mixes two-component polyurethane systems automatically.
  • Paving: SMG's PlanoMatic P936 is its largest paver, built for running tracks and placing strips up to 3.6 m wide, and the P828 and P928 are compact pavers for tracks and multipurpose courts.
  • Spraying and spreading: the StrukturMatic S122D sprays structural coatings and primer, and the GranuMatic G402D blows rubber granules onto polyurethane coatings up to 12 m wide.
  • Grinding and line marking: the RotoMatic R58 is a compact grinder for edges and small areas, and the LineStar striping machines, including the LS15, mark lines on synthetic surfaces.

Before you choose, settle these points:

  • Whether you need a certified surface. For events that require one, check which systems list certification and ask the brand.
  • Permeable or impermeable. It affects drainage and the system you can use.
  • Thickness and build. Full-pour, sandwich and structural spray systems are built differently, so compare the layers on each product page.
  • Indoor or outdoor. Some surfaces are listed for both, others for outdoor use only.
  • Equipment. If you are building the track, check the capacity, power and weight of the machines against the size of the job.
  • Warranty. It varies by system, so compare it on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

What does this catalogue cover for running tracks?

Track surfaces from Robbins Sports Surfaces and GeoSurfaces, and the machines used to build them from SMG, including mixers, pavers, sprayers, a granule blower, a grinder and line markers.

What is the difference between full-pour, sandwich and structural spray tracks?

GeoSurfaces' FP and FP-10 are impermeable full-pour systems, built in three and two layers. Its SW is an impermeable sandwich-style system, and its SP is a permeable structural spray track with an SBR rubber base mat and a sprayed polyurethane and EPDM top layer. Robbins' Durathon Elite surfaces are vulcanized rubber, and Pulastic is a seamless polyurethane floor.

Which tracks are listed as IAAF approved?

GeoSurfaces lists its FP, SW and SP as IAAF approved systems. IAAF is the former name of World Athletics. The pages for the GeoTrax FP-10 and for Robbins' Durathon and Pulastic do not list a certification, so check with the brand if your events require a certified surface.

Can a running track be built indoors?

Robbins' Durathon Elite track surfaces can be used indoors and outdoors, and its Pulastic range suits indoor and outdoor track and field. GeoSurfaces' GeoTrax systems are listed for outdoor use.

What equipment is used to build a track?

SMG groups its machines by the step they perform: mixing binder and rubber granules, paving elastic layers, spraying structural coatings, blowing granules, grinding and line marking.

How do the SMG pavers differ?

The P936 is the largest and places strips up to 3.6 m wide at roughly 970 square meters an hour. The P828 covers up to 890 square meters an hour in strips up to 2.7 m, and the P928 covers up to 730 square meters an hour and weighs 950 kg, so it is easier to move between jobs.
