How to choose LED sports lighting

LED sports lighting falls into three groups, and each is built for a different job.

  • Court lighting (6 products from Duvon Lighting and Shinetoo): asymmetric, full cut-off fixtures for tennis and pickleball courts, from 100 W to 800 W. They list about 13,000 to 104,000 lumens per fixture, 140 lm/W and 7 to 10 year warranties.
  • Field and stadium lighting (22 products from LED Lighting Supply, Shinetoo, Duvon Lighting, GeoSport Lighting and EcoSport Lighting): floodlights and stadium lights for baseball, softball, football, soccer and lacrosse, from 200 W to 1,600 W. Beam angles run from narrow 15 degree long-throw optics to wide 60 degree beams, efficacy from 130 to 175 lm/W, and ingress ratings from IP65 to IP67 or IP68.
  • Indoor high bays (6 products from Shinetoo and Duvon Lighting): UFO, round and linear fixtures for gyms and indoor courts, from 70 W to 400 W and about 9,800 to 56,000 lumens, with a 5 year warranty.

Before you choose, settle these points:

  • Light level and uniformity. These depend on the sport and level of play. Several brands design to IES RP-6, the recommended practice for sports and recreational area lighting.
  • Mounting height and throw distance. They decide the beam angle and wattage you need.
  • What you are replacing. Each product page lists the metal halide or HID wattage it is designed to replace, so you can see whether it suits your existing poles and wiring.
  • Glare and spill light. Court fixtures with full cut-off optics help limit light leaving the site.
  • Certifications. Many utility rebate programs ask for DLC listing, and a UL or ETL safety listing is common. Each product page shows which apply.
  • Warranty and rated life. Both vary by brand and model, so compare them on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

What types of LED sports lighting does this catalogue cover?

Three groups: court lighting for tennis and pickleball, field and stadium lighting, and indoor high bays. Together they include products from Duvon Lighting, EcoSport Lighting, GeoSport Lighting, LED Lighting Supply and Shinetoo.

How do I choose between court, field and indoor lighting?

It comes down to where the light mounts. Court lights go on poles around the court and use asymmetric, full cut-off optics to control glare. Field and stadium lights are floodlights with beam angle options for longer throws. Indoor high bays hang from the ceiling in gyms and indoor courts, in ratings of about 70 to 400 W.

How much light output do I need?

It depends on the sport, the level of play, the mounting height and the layout, so the answer is a lighting design, not one lumen figure. Individual fixtures here range from about 13,000 lumens on small court lights to around 250,000 on the largest stadium lights. Ask the brand for a lighting layout for your site.

Can LED fixtures replace metal halide fixtures on existing poles?

Often, yes. Each product page lists the HID wattage it is designed to replace, from 400 W up to 3,000 W, so you can see whether a fixture suits your existing poles and wiring. Check pole loading and aiming before you decide, and ask the brand for a layout for your site. See the LED lighting case studies below for retrofit examples across brands.

Which certifications should I look for?

DLC listing, which many utility rebate programs ask for, and a UL or ETL safety listing. Many products here list DLC Premium, ETL or UL, and each product page shows which apply. See how we vet brands for the certifications brands typically hold.

What warranties do these fixtures have?

Court lights carry 7 to 10 year warranties and indoor high bays carry 5 years. Field and stadium fixtures start at 5 years, and some models offer longer terms, up to 25 years on certain options. Check the product page for the exact warranty.

How do I get a quote or a budget?

Use the Get a Quote button on any product page to send your project details to the brand. To budget first, try the sports field lighting cost calculator.
