Lakeview Elementary in Seattle replaced a worn dirt field with a 56,470 sq ft turf field on Ultra Base Champion panels, finished in four weeks, per Ultra Base.
Results
The challenge
Seattle averages about 150 days of rain a year, so safe, clean places for kids to play are hard to provide. The school's worn dirt field was hard to reach with the trucks and machinery that heavy excavation and rock replacement require.
The solution
Design firm DA Hogan and FieldTurf Washington planned a replacement field of 56,470 square feet. FieldTurf's lead recognized the Champion panel's benefits for the hard-to-reach site, and combining inline drains with the panels' drainage capacity created the drainage the project needed.
The outcome
Ultra Base reports a multi-use field for baseball, soccer and other activities, ready for play in four weeks.
About the Champion panel
The Ultra Base Champion panel is a 3/4 inch interlocking panel used as a sub base for artificial turf on landscapes, athletic fields and golf areas. Ultra Base lists its vertical drainage at 1,582 inches per hour, a weight of 6 lbs per panel and a 10-year warranty.
Key takeaways
- A hard-to-reach site favored panels over a conventional rock base.
- Inline drains plus the panels' drainage capacity handle Seattle's rain.
- One field serves baseball, soccer and other activities.
