A portable pickleball court was set up in the Joshua Tree desert on Ultra Base Foundation panels, with no concrete pad, Ultra Base reports.

The challenge
A pickleball court is normally built on a poured concrete base with special acrylic coatings, which isn't practical in the middle of the desert. The challenge was whether a portable court could be built in the open on whatever ground was available.
The solution
Ultra Base's Foundation panels were laid down in a big open area to create a base. On top, the customer placed a pre-painted, two-color pickleball court from VersaCourt, supplied through RG Event Services.
The outcome
Ultra Base says the court was a surface that felt safe and that players enjoyed, though the panel base does not give exactly the same bounce as a concrete court.
About the Foundation panel
The Ultra Base Foundation panel is a structural, 1.25 inch interlocking panel used in place of a concrete or asphalt pad, with fast drainage and room for thermal expansion so the surface does not buckle. Ultra Base says it cuts installation time by about 40 percent.
Key takeaways
- A panel base made a court possible where pouring concrete was not practical.
- Ultra Base is candid that bounce differs from a concrete court.
- The court is portable and can be taken away again.
