A backyard basketball court was built with modular sport tiles over Ultra Base panels, in a space too hard to reach for concrete, in a few days, per Ultra Base.
Results
The challenge
The homeowner wanted a sport court, but the space was hard to reach with heavy equipment, which made a concrete or asphalt base impractical. Ultra Base first laid sport tiles over its interlocking panels in February 2006, and says the panels are now specified as a safer, more permeable base for backyard courts.
The solution
The team compacted the ground with a vibratory stamper and covered it with a permeable woven geotextile. The Ultra Base panels went down, then a second fabric to act as a sound barrier between the panels and the plastic tiles. The modular tiles were assembled directly on top, and the fencing, basketball goals and lights were added.
The outcome
Ultra Base says the court was ready in a few days. It describes the interlocking panel base as offering stability and drainage with a more forgiving, safer-feeling playing surface than concrete.
Key takeaways
- Limited access ruled out heavy equipment and a concrete base.
- A second fabric layer separates the panels from the tiles.
- A few days of work produced a finished backyard court.
