The Challenge
Spartan Sports Park’s baseball field relied on aging 1000-watt metal halide fixtures that couldn’t keep up. Light levels were inconsistent across the field and stands, creating safety concerns for players and spectators. The old system also ran hot, leading to premature fixture failure and frequent maintenance, made harder by pole height and weather exposure.
The Solution
LED Lighting Supply worked with Spartan Sports Park to define target light levels (20 fc infield, 10 fc outfield), mounting height (25 feet), and competition level (recreation). A custom lighting plan mapped expected performance before installation. The recommendation: replace the 1000W metal halide fixtures with 400W LED Area Flood Lights.
The Results
The upgrade delivered a 65% drop in energy consumption and extended fixture lifespan by up to 36 years. Actual foot candle readings hit 20 fc infield and 13 fc outfield, meeting the target. Financially, the facility saw $11,040 in annual energy savings and $630 in annual maintenance savings, totaling over $34,630 in savings after five years. Spartan Sports Park now runs day and night games with consistent, safe lighting across the field.
