Tussey Mountain lit a previously dark Blue Line slope for night skiing with 45 LED floodlights on new wood poles, LED Lighting Supply reports.
Results
The challenge
A busy intermediate run at the resort had no lighting for night riding, and the rest of the mountain used aging 1,000 W metal halides. Mixing LED and metal halide sections would also leave riders waiting for their eyes to adjust. Poor slope light slows patrol, groomers and maintenance crews as well.
The solution
The mountain manager first ordered a single 400 W LED flood to test on one section, then asked for a plan and estimate for more. LED Lighting Supply designed a phased project of 45 lights, using 400 W and 600 W LED floods on 30-foot wood poles at a 25-foot mounting height, with a design benchmark of 1 to 15 fc adjusted for snow reflection.
The outcome
The Blue Line slopes now have lighting where there was none, and each later phase replaces more of the metal halides. LED Lighting Supply estimates $9,910 in combined energy and maintenance savings in the first year, and about $49,550 over five.
About the 400 W modular flood light
The 400 W modular LED flood light has trunnion mounting and produces 56,000 lumens at 140 lumens per watt. It is made to replace 1000 W metal halide fixtures. The 600 W modular version produces 84,000 lumens at 140 lumens per watt and is made to replace 1500 W metal halide fixtures.
Key takeaways
- A one-light test order came before the full project.
- A phased rollout lit the busiest unlit slope first without a large upfront commitment.
- Light targets were adjusted for snow reflection.
