At the Home Depot Center in Carson, crews converted an 82,500 sq ft grass field to turf on Ultra Base panels in six days, Ultra Base says.
Results
The challenge
The field was set to host the California state championship football bowl games, an international soccer match and a collegiate bowl, and each of them required a synthetic turf field. The venue's natural grass field, 82,500 sq ft in all, had to be changed over fast.
The solution
Crews stripped the grass, then laser graded the ground and compacted it to the panel specification. A ten-technician team put down permeable geotextile and snapped together more than 15,000 Ultra Base panels within 18 hours. The surface was AstroTurf's GameDay Grass 3D60 Extreme, which was rolled out, seamed and infilled. After the events, the whole field was taken apart and reinstalled at its permanent home down the road.
The outcome
Ultra Base reports the conversion was completed in six days, and the field hosted the three events. Because it sits on interlocking panels, it could be disassembled and moved afterwards.
Key takeaways
- The field had to be converted for three events that all required synthetic turf.
- A ten-person crew laid over 15,000 panels in under 18 hours.
- The same field was moved to a permanent location after the events.
