A former junkyard in St. Petersburg became BT Sports Academy's turf soccer field, built on Ultra Base panels, according to Ultra Base.
Results
The challenge
The founder had long wanted a sports complex where athletes of every age, skill level and means could play. The site he had was a junkyard, and building an artificial soccer field there meant choosing among several base systems.
The solution
The team cleaned out the junkyard, leveled and graded the land and fixed surface imperfections, then built a well-compacted, level surface, which Ultra Base calls the key to a stable, long-lasting sub base. Geotextile fabric and Ultra Base panels went down, and the turf was laid on top.
The outcome
Ultra Base reports the field now serves as a sports complex, and it says the panel system offers better stability, drainage and playability than other field base systems. The owner chose it for its function, safety and ease of use.
Key takeaways
- Site preparation was most of the work: clearing, grading and compacting.
- The owner compared several field base methods before choosing panels.
- The complex is open to players of all ages and means.
Project details
In their words
One of my lifelong dreams was to build a soccer complex where kids and adults can come and play. When I researched about building an artificial soccer field complex, I found there were several methods to do it, but was sold on the functionality, safety and ease of use of the Ultra Base panels...so I decided to go with them.
