Worthington Speedway replaced 41 aging 1500W metal halide fixtures with 600W marine-grade LED flood lights, cutting energy use and saving $24,240 a year, according to LED Lighting Supply.

The challenge
The track was lit by 1500W metal halide fixtures that could not keep up with weekly high-speed racing. Uneven light created glare and eye strain as drivers moved between bright and shadowed areas, which raised the safety risk at speed. The yellow-toned bulbs made it hard for officials and fans to tell cars, flags and track hazards apart, the fixtures needed a warm-up period before they lit, and high energy use and heat were wearing them out.
The solution
LED Lighting Supply worked with TAM Enterprises LLC to assess the track's lighting needs, aiming for the 30 to 50 foot-candle range typical for a track of this size and level of competition. The recommendation was a one-for-one replacement of 41 fixtures with 600W industrial marine-grade LED flood lights, each with a glare-reducing visor and 45-degree optics on every 200-watt module. The marine-grade build protects against dust, moisture and harsh weather.
The outcome
The upgrade cut energy use by 65.2% and extended fixture life expectancy five times. The track saves $24,240 a year in energy, a 296% return in the first year, growing to $173,400 in savings and an 1,880% return over five years. Drivers now see more evenly across the track, which also improves the view for officials and spectators.
