Spartan Sports Park cut its baseball field lighting energy use by 65% by replacing 1000W metal halide fixtures with 400W LED flood lights, according to LED Lighting Supply.
Results
The challenge
The park's baseball field was lit by 1000-watt metal halide fixtures that had reached the limit of what they could do. Light levels varied across the field and the stands, which raised safety concerns for players and spectators. The old fixtures also ran hot, so they failed early and needed frequent maintenance, a harder job with tall poles and exposure to the weather.
The solution
LED Lighting Supply started from the park's goals. Together they set target light levels of 20 foot-candles on the infield and 10 on the outfield, a mounting height of 25 feet, and a recreation level of play. A custom lighting plan then showed the expected performance before any equipment was installed. The recommendation was to replace each 1000W metal halide fixture with a 400W LED area flood light.
The outcome
Measured light levels matched the plan: 20 foot-candles on the infield and 13 on the outfield, above the 10 targeted. Energy use fell by 65%, which the company reports as $11,040 saved each year, plus $630 a year in lower maintenance costs, more than $34,630 over five years. The park now plays both day and night games under consistent, safe lighting.
