Performance Indoor Training's Frisco soccer field went from about 1 fc to 7 fc with 400 W LED floods on its four existing poles, LED Lighting Supply says.
Results
The challenge
The 35-by-55-yard field was lit by aging 1,000 W metal halides that barely reached 1 fc, far below the 5 to 10 fc recommended for recreational soccer. The four poles were unevenly spaced, the new lights had to use them, and the lighting had to meet International Dark-Sky Association standards.
The solution
LED Lighting Supply checked photos of the poles to confirm they could carry the new fixtures, then laid out the field with photometric plans. A first plan with 12 lights fell short, so the final design used four fixtures on each pole, on new 4-fixture bullhorn mounts replacing 3-fixture ones. The installer was Pro Lighting Texas.
The outcome
LED Lighting Supply reports an average of 7 fc, enough to meet the recreational guideline, with no light trespass onto neighbouring areas. It estimates yearly savings of about $4,300, including $4,090 in energy, a payback of 1.6 years and a 207 percent five-year return.
About the 400 W modular flood light
The 400 W modular LED flood light has trunnion mounting and produces 56,000 lumens at 140 lumens per watt. It is made to replace 1000 W metal halide fixtures.
Key takeaways
- The design started from the pole layout, not from an ideal fixture count.
- A 12-light first plan fell short, and the final plan used 16.
- Dark-sky compliance made containing light as important as adding it.
