Emerald Playground Association lit two Little League fields with 101 LED floods on existing poles, at 44 to 48 fc in the infields, LED Lighting Supply says.

The challenge
Practices and games at the nonprofit's two fields often ran into the evening, so late innings were played in fading light. That capped how many games could be scheduled, and it ruled out hosting tournaments. The group was also worried about hot spots around the poles and shadows in the outfield corners and foul territory.
The solution
Each field already had six 40-foot wood poles. LED Lighting Supply ran a custom lighting plan to confirm fixture counts and recommended 400 W modular LED flood lights, with a total of 101 supplied. The electrician prepared a preliminary budget for the association's approval, then installed the system once the funds were secured. LED Lighting Supply cites 30 to 50 fc for recreational infields and 15 to 30 fc for outfields.
The outcome
LED Lighting Supply reports infield averages of 44 fc on the left field and 48 fc on the right, with uniformity ratios of 3.8 and 2.6, and outfield averages of 14 and 20 fc. The association's teams can now play tournament-level games after dark.
About the 400 W modular flood light
The 400 W modular LED flood light has trunnion mounting and produces 56,000 lumens at 140 lumens per watt. It is made to replace 1000 W metal halide fixtures.
Key takeaways
- Existing wood poles were reused on both fields.
- Aiming and optics, not just brightness, addressed the hot-spot and shadow worries.
- Better light opened the door to hosting tournaments locally.
