A Canadian hockey rink replaced metal-halide lighting in one off-season with TitanBay LEDs aimed to keep glare off the face-off circle, Duvon says.
Results
The challenge
Ice is highly reflective, so poorly designed lighting bounces glare into players' eyes and makes the puck vanish in a bright hot spot. Tracking the puck under reflections was the central problem.
The solution
Duvon used 150 W TitanBay heads with a controlled-glare distribution on the existing ceiling truss, aimed so the strongest hot spot misses the center face-off circle. The 70 CRI optics and 5000K spectrum improve puck-against-ice contrast, and the original metal-halide system was retired in a single off-season.
The outcome
Duvon reports 1.2:1 surface uniformity and flicker below 0.10, suitable for full league games and TV coverage, with a saving of up to 58 percent.
About the TitanBay fixture
TitanBay is Duvon's 100, 150 and 200 watt indoor high bay for indoor sports and general-use spaces. It produces 15,000 to 30,000 lumens with a 90 or 120 degree beam. Housings are IP20 as standard, with IP65 optional, and operate from -40 to 122 F.
Key takeaways
- Reflection off the ice was the design problem, not raw brightness.
- Aiming kept the hot spot away from the face-off circle.
- The rink was converted in a single off-season.
