Glenview Prairie Club lit its tennis and platform paddle courts with Patriot LEDs built for instant-on play in sub-zero Chicago-area winters, Duvon says.
Results
The challenge
Chicago-area players keep platform paddle going all year, even in sub-zero weather, when metal-halide lamps are slow to strike and struggle to restart in the cold. Glenview wanted lighting that performs the same at -20 F as in summer.
The solution
Duvon specified 200 W Patriot heads with drivers it rates for cold starts down to -40 F, plus a water-repelling lens coating meant to shed frost and ice between matches.
The outcome
Duvon reports light that comes on instantly in any weather, with uniformity of 1.3:1 on the tennis courts and 1.4:1 on the paddle courts, about 45 fc on the paddle courts, and a 61 percent drop in energy across the property.
About the Patriot fixture
Patriot is Duvon's 100, 150 and 200 watt court lighting family for community, school and park courts and pickleball projects. It produces up to about 25,000 lumens per fixture. It can replace HID fixtures of up to 500 watts.
Key takeaways
- Winter play meant cold-start behavior was a design requirement, not an extra.
- A lens coating was specified to shed frost between matches.
- The lighting covers both tennis and platform paddle on one property.
