Benedictine University replaced worn-out metal-halide field lights in Lisle with Duvon Liberty LEDs set up for practice, varsity and broadcast use, Duvon says.
Results
The challenge
The university's metal-halide field lighting had reached the end of its life, with driver failures about every month and a field that no longer met its original specification. Benedictine wanted a replacement that would carry the program for the next two decades.
The solution
Duvon supplied 1200 W Liberty field heads on a re-engineered aiming plan. The optics were modelled zone by zone for football and area by area for baseball, balancing horizontal and vertical light on both benches and the camera side for live streaming. Controls store five scenes, from practice and JV through varsity, broadcast and tournament play.
The outcome
Duvon reports 75 fc horizontal and 100 fc vertical on the camera side after commissioning, flicker (TLM) below 0.10 through the dimming range, and about 60 percent less operating energy than the fixtures it replaced.
About the Liberty fixture
Liberty is Duvon's multi-sport field lighting family, from 800 to 1,200 watts. It produces 104,000 to 144,000 lumens per fixture at 130 to 140 lumens per watt, with 15, 25 or 45 degree optics. It is made to replace 2000 to 2500 watt metal halide and HID fixtures.
Key takeaways
- Five lighting scenes let one system serve practices, games and streamed events.
- Vertical illuminance was designed for cameras, not only for players.
- Monthly driver failures were the trigger for replacing the old system outright.
