St. Croix Central High School in Hammond replaced its natural grass field with Sprinturf DFE Extreme turf in summer 2023, Sprinturf reports.

The challenge
The district wanted to replace an aging grass field with a surface that could take heavy seasonal use while cutting maintenance and weather interruptions. It needed a durable, playable surface for several sports, and had to finish within a short summer window before the school year.
The solution
Sprinturf supplied its DFE Extreme system at a 42 oz face weight and a 2.5 inch pile, with sand and rubber infill, for football and soccer. The project team coordinated installation closely with the district to finish inside the summer window with minimal disruption. Bolton & Menk, Inc. provided engineering and design coordination, Market & Johnson was the construction firm, and Sprinturf representative Mat Steinberg worked with the district throughout.
The outcome
Sprinturf says the finished field gives the school a resilient surface that handles heavy use, drains better and makes the field available more often in Wisconsin weather. It was ready for fall competition after the summer 2023 install.
About the UltraBlade DFE Extreme system
UltraBlade DFE Extreme is a dual-fiber system that combines parallel long-slit film with a thick monofilament, which is meant to hold infill in place. Sprinturf lists it with a 2 to 2.5 inch pile, a 52 oz standard face weight, drainage above 60 inches per hour and an 8-year warranty.
Key takeaways
- The job had to finish inside one summer window.
- Replacing natural grass was meant to cut maintenance and weather downtime.
- Engineering, construction and the turf maker coordinated closely with the district.
