Marshalltown rebuilt century-old Franklin Field with new turf, a six-lane track, lights and a press box, as part of its Reimagine Miller plan.
Results
The challenge
Franklin Field has long hosted both athletics and community gatherings, but the aging stadium needed work on safety, accessibility and function. The district wanted to keep the stadium's identity while adding modern surfaces and support buildings for football, soccer and track and field, and to keep the space useful to the neighbouring north side of the city.
The solution
The redevelopment centered on a new synthetic turf field and a new six-lane oval track with an eight-lane straightaway. It also added stadium lighting, upgraded bleachers, a press box, new concession and restroom facilities and better accessibility. The district worked with Invision Architecture, Clapsaddle-Garber Associates and construction manager Boyd Jones, with phased construction.
The outcome
Sprinturf describes Franklin Field as now a multi-sport venue for the district's middle school football, soccer and track events and a community asset, with a better spectator experience and more flexibility for future events.
Key takeaways
- The project kept a century-old stadium in use instead of replacing it.
- The turf is one piece of a wider package of stands, lights and a track.
- Community access beyond school sports was a stated goal.
