Lehigh University gave its football program a new practice field in Bethlehem, built on Sprinturf's UltraBlade DFE Single Needle turf, according to Sprinturf.

The challenge
Lehigh's practice field on the Goodman Campus is the main training facility for its football team, and it is used every day for practices, position work and conditioning. The university needed turf that would hold up to that repetition, keep its footing and stay playable through preseason and the final week of the season, with fewer weather delays and less field wear.
The solution
Sprinturf supplied its UltraBlade DFE Single Needle system, specified for football use, with a 2.25 inch pile, a 50 oz face weight and a rubber and sand infill. The turf came from Sprinturf's own ISO 9001 certified plant in the USA and carries an 8-year insured warranty covering materials and workmanship.
The outcome
Sprinturf says the finished field gives the Mountain Hawks a dependable training surface and points to its long-term field performance data, which it says shows systems like this lasting longer than many competing surfaces.
About the UltraBlade DFE Single Needle system
UltraBlade DFE Single Needle puts Sprinturf's slit-film fiber and a C8 monofilament in the same tuft, on a 1/2 inch gauge, so the fibers spread evenly across the field for a refined look. The slit film is 120 microns thick and the monofilament 330 microns, on a triple primary backing with a polyurethane secondary coat.
Key takeaways
- A practice field takes heavier repetition than a game field, so durability drove the choice.
- A synthetic surface keeps the practice schedule from depending on weather.
- The warranty covers materials and workmanship for eight years.
