The challenge
Moody Coliseum draws crowds in the thousands for college and pro sports, community events and concerts. SMU wanted a permanent wood floor that protected players on a 30-game season and could also take heavy event traffic without becoming hard to maintain.
The solution
SMU installed Robbins MVP and Bio-Channel Star floors. Under the maple strips, the system layers a continuous shockpad, a three-quarter-inch plywood subfloor and 16-gauge steel anchor channels.
The outcome
SMU's director of event operations says the players noticed the difference the moment they stepped onto the floor and that it should mean less wear and tear on athletes over a long season.
About the floors used
MVP is Robbins' patented system for damping vibration and keeping a floor uniform, with a Zero/G shockpad and a continuous laminated subfloor. Bio-Channel Star adds anchored, resilient construction with a continuous subfloor and shockpad, and Robbins says the current version carries MFMA third-party PUR certification.
Key takeaways
- An arena floor has to protect players and also take heavy event traffic.
- Players noticed the difference as soon as they walked onto the floor.
- The floor was one part of a $47 million renovation.
Project details
In their words
We had to think about the best interests of the players and their safety. The players could feel the difference the second they walked out. It’s an incredible difference. You can feel it underneath your feet … it’s catering to your weight and it will help prevent injuries … there’s less wear and tear on athletes with a 30-game schedule.
