The challenge
At 220,000 square feet, Saville is one of the largest community sports centers in North America. It serves recreational players and Olympic-level athletes, including the university's basketball and volleyball teams, a gymnastics club and a volleyball society, so the floors had to hold up to constant use.
The solution
Dealer Centaur Products supplied and installed over 130,000 square feet of Bio-Channel Classic in nine NBA-sized basketball courts and nine full-size volleyball courts, along with Sportwood Ultra Star and Pulastic surfaces elsewhere. The builder said Robbins was chosen for its leading position in hardwood floors, and Centaur for its local workforce and its history with the university.
The outcome
The facility's board representative says the community praises the floors, with no leg fatigue or dead spots. The university's women's basketball coach reports fewer shin splints and calls it the best playing surface the team has used.
About the floors used
Bio-Channel Classic is the original Bio-Channel design, relied on by top NCAA and NBA basketball programs. A plywood sleeper floats on Bio-Pads inside a steel channel anchored to the concrete, which gives the stability of an anchored floor with the comfort of a resilient one. Sportwood Ultra Star is a low-profile floating system with an edge-grain maple parquet surface on EPDM rubber Bio-Pads.
Key takeaways
- Eighteen courts sit under one roof, which is why floor consistency mattered.
- Users range from recreational players to university teams and a gymnastics club.
- The dealer was chosen partly for its local workforce.
Project details
In their words
The community speaks very highly of the hardwood floors and in particular, they are not experiencing any fatigue in their legs after playing; [there are] no dead spots. It is not uncommon to hear them say that ‘these are the best hardwood floors we have ever played on and we should have built the facility 10 years ago.’
