The Robert Lee YMCA in downtown Vancouver opened in 2010 with a 10,000 sq ft Robbins MVP maple gym and a Pulastic Pro 165 floor in its family area.
Results
The challenge
The YMCA serves children, teenagers, adults, families and seniors, so it needed floors that were soft and safe across many activities and that were easy to maintain.
The solution
The renovation put Robbins MVP with maple in the gymnasium and Pulastic Pro 165 in the family development area on the fifth floor, where kids and families play, jump and throw balls.
The outcome
Eight years after opening, the operations manager says the floor is easy to maintain, has had no major problems, and gives a soft surface suited to kids and families. Membership grew from 1,700 before the renovation to more than 10,500.
About the floors used
MVP is Robbins' patented system for damping vibration and keeping the surface uniform, anchored over a resilient layer on a continuous subfloor. Pulastic Pro 165 is the thickest model in the Pulastic range, at 16.5 mm, with a pad that cuts contact noise and adds thermal insulation. Its seamless, non-porous surface is easy to clean.
Key takeaways
- Two floors for two uses: maple for the gym and a seamless floor for the family area.
- Easy maintenance was a stated requirement.
- The operations manager reports no major problems after eight years.

In their words
We have had a good experience with the floor since opening our doors 8 years ago. It’s really easy to maintain and we haven’t had any major issues. And it addressed one of the major things that was important to us – a great floor that’s soft and good for play and doing any type of activity for kids and families.
