Macalester College's Leonard Center fieldhouse has a 200-yard Durathon Elite track fused with a spike-proof Pulastic center, installed in 2008.
Results
The challenge
Macalester built its athletic and wellness complex to host regional and national competitions as an NCAA Division III college. The 53,000-square-foot fieldhouse had to serve track and field, volleyball, basketball, tennis, baseball and softball on a single surface.
The solution
Dealer Anderson Ladd installed Robbins flooring in the racquetball courts, dance studios and the fieldhouse. The fieldhouse combines a 200-yard Durathon Elite track with a spike-proof Pulastic SP Track 160 center, fused into one surface.
The outcome
The athletics facilities manager reports no problems from running several sports on one floor and says the college is pleased with its playability and durability. Track coaches describe it standing up to high jump and pole vault, with no slipping.
About the surfaces used
Durathon Elite is Robbins' range of vulcanized rubber surfaces for running tracks and field-house infields, from 6 to 13 mm thick. Its track model is spike resistant, with a waffle-back design that cushions impact. Pulastic is Robbins' range of seamless, padded polyurethane floors.
Key takeaways
- Fusing a rubber track to a spike-proof center let one fieldhouse serve running and court sports.
- Six sports share the surface.
- The complex was designed to host regional and national competitions.
