The Cincinnati Friars Club opened in 2014 with over 30,000 sq ft of Robbins floors: Bio-Channel Star on four courts and Galaxy rubber in the weight room.

The challenge
The Friars Club has served young people in Cincinnati since 1860, including many at-risk youth. For its new building it needed floors that were safe for children playing every day and for the referees working their games, and that could be installed without disrupting the opening.
The solution
Dealer Cincinnati Floor Company installed Bio-Channel Star went onto the four regulation-size courts used for high school basketball and volleyball, and 7,500 square feet of Galaxy rubber went into the fitness center next door.
The outcome
The club's executive director described the installation as quick and trouble-free, and said the referees were happy with how the floor looks and feels. She also noted the children are proud to play on the same type of floor used in the NBA.
About the floors used
Bio-Channel Star pairs a continuous resilient pad with an interwoven anchored subfloor that allows slight lateral movement to relieve stress, with better shock absorption and ball bounce than earlier versions. Galaxy is Robbins' range of recycled-rubber floors for weight rooms and fitness areas, in five models that cover rolls, tiles and vulcanized sheet from 3.5 mm to 1 in thick.
Key takeaways
- One dealer supplied both the hardwood courts and the rubber fitness floor.
- Referees' opinions mattered alongside the players'.
- More than 30,000 square feet of Robbins surfaces went into a single building.

In their words
Robbins floors have been great. They [referees] think the floor is great and not just the look of the floor, but the quality and the feel of the floor for the kids and the officials.
