The Charlotte Hornets replaced their arena's portable basketball floor with a 7,000 sq ft Robbins All-Star Plus floor that lays down without bolts or pins.

The challenge
The Hornets had played on a Robbins portable floor for many years, and it was time to replace it. The arena crew handles the floor on every event changeover, so the new surface had to go down quickly, cause fewer injuries for the people laying it, and still give players the performance expected at NBA level.
The solution
Robbins supplied its All-Star Plus portable floor with RapidLatch, milled the wood and installed 7,000 square feet of it. Robbins also cut more than 250 stencils to paint the team logo, a job that took three weeks once the floor was down. Because the panels latch together, the crew no longer needs bolts or pins.
The outcome
Arena operations staff say the crew now sets the floor up faster and with fewer injuries, and that staff and fans have been positive about it. Robbins says the floor absorbs about 60 percent of an athlete's impact energy.
About the All-Star Plus floor
All-Star is Robbins' portable hardwood system for arenas and event venues. It is made for quick changeovers and can be supplied sanded, painted and finished with team logos and game lines. Robbins has more than 60 years of experience building portable floors, and the system is used by NBA teams, top NCAA programs and FIBA championships.
Key takeaways
- A portable floor lets an arena switch between events without a permanent court.
- Latching panels remove the need for bolts or pins during setup.
- Logos are painted after the floor is down, which took three weeks here.
