Calvin College picked Robbins MVP for its 30,000 sq ft Spoelhof Fieldhouse after its volleyball coach went looking for a floor that cuts player fatigue.
Results
The challenge
Calvin's volleyball coach, Dr. Amber Warners, was concerned that the team's old floor tired players and put their safety at risk. She began looking for a better floor in 2009, as the college planned a new fieldhouse.
The solution
Warners and the men's basketball coach consulted dealer Foster Specialty Floors and visited the Robbins Institute in Cincinnati, where they saw MVP, which was not yet on the market. After seeing it in use at another facility, they specified it for the 30,000-square-foot floor.
The outcome
Warners reports players wear down less and stay fresh, and that she can train them harder. She also says the women's volleyball team has since won more NCAA championships, with injuries virtually eliminated.
About the MVP floor
MVP is Robbins' patented Maximum Vibration Protection system, tuned to remove resonance frequencies so vibration is damped across the floor. It is anchored through a resilient layer with no hard connections to the active layers, built on continuous laminated subfloor panels, and designed for even ball bounce and force reduction. Robbins cites an independent biomechanics study by Dr. Benno Nigg for the design.
Key takeaways
- A coach with a background in biomechanics led the specification.
- The decision came after seeing the floor installed in another facility.
- MVP was not yet on the market when the coaches first saw it.

In their words
Our players aren’t wearing down as easily and they stay fresh. I can push them harder because they can take more.
