Calvary Christian Academy replaced a bubbling 10-year-old vinyl gym floor with 12,400 sq ft of Robbins Bio-Channel SB maple.
Results
The challenge
The school's vinyl floor had been laid with the wrong glue and kept bubbling at the seams. Each repair cost about $1,200 a year, and one bubble ran 15 feet between the basket and the three-point line. It was a trip hazard for a state-champion basketball team and for volleyball players. Calvary is one of South Florida's largest Christian schools, and some of its 2017 state-champion players were being scouted by colleges, so the school wanted a floor to match their level.
The solution
The school replaced the vinyl with 12,400 square feet of Robbins Bio-Channel SB maple, installed by Impact Sport Surfaces. Robbins says this situation is common and is why it declines to install vinyl sports floors. It points to its full-time research and development staff and to the principle that the best protection is a floor that performs the same on every step.
The outcome
The athletic director says the floor looks good with its logos and printing, that athletes with shin splints and impact injuries like it, and that the gym now matches the level of the basketball program.
About the Bio-Channel SB floor
Bio-Channel SB is a Bio-Channel system with Zero/G vibration control and a self-blocking feature that limits deflection under heavy loads and gym equipment. It uses a continuous, interwoven subfloor and elongated anchor slots that let the floor move slightly so stress does not build up.
Key takeaways
- Repairing the vinyl floor cost about $1,200 a year and never solved the problem.
- A 15-foot bubble in the middle of the court was a trip hazard.
- The school replaced vinyl with maple to match its basketball program.
Project details
In their words
Visually it’s just beautiful, from the logos and the print and everything it speaks volumes. And for those who are dealing with shin splints and impact injuries, they love the new floor. Our boys’ basketball program won a state championship last year so we obviously have a program of high caliber and now we have the facility that matches it. It’s hard to explain unless you go onto a vinyl floor versus a wood floor. It’s just completely different.
