Tensile membrane architecture is well suited to this. The membrane is shaped with a double inverted curvature (anticlastic curvature), which lets it work mainly under tension. That geometry spreads stress evenly across the surface and transfers it into the supporting structure, preventing tearing in wind or sagging under water or snow.
A permanent membrane structure is never just fabric. It’s a full system, membrane, load-bearing frame, connections, foundations, and engineering, sized and designed together. SMC2 typically pairs its textile envelopes with glue-laminated timber or hybrid wood-steel structures to achieve long, clear spans.
The payoff is year-round usability. A durable envelope removes weather as a limiting factor, turning more hours into playable hours, which is ultimately how a permanent facility’s value gets measured.
