An airnasium is a permanent, roofed sports structure that protects a field from weather without fully enclosing it, a step up from a temporary tent or an air dome that can collapse under snow or blow away in wind.
SMC2 recently built one at the Makkabi Campus in Frankfurt, home to TuS Makkabi Frankfurt: two outdoor halls covering three synthetic turf fields, about 8,525 sq ft (792 m²) of canopy in total. The structure pairs glue-laminated timber with hot-dip galvanized steel on strip foundations, topped with a translucent PVC-coated membrane roof that lets daylight through. Ball-catch netting runs to the roofline so each field is fully enclosed, and built-in LED lighting extends play into the evening.
The payoff for facility owners: lower build and running costs than a fully enclosed hall (no large HVAC system needed), less UV and weather wear on turf and equipment, reduced sun exposure for players and staff, and a field that’s usable year-round instead of sitting idle through winter or peak summer heat.
SMC2 is listed in the Sports Venue Calculator supplier directory, where planners can review their work directly.
